Position: ROSTER CULTURAL MEDIATORS ON CALL – SOMALI LANGUAGE

Context of the mission
Médecins du Monde is an international humanitarian organization whose mission is to provide medical care for the most vulnerable populations, the world over. It seeks to stimulate voluntary commitment from doctors, other health care providers, and from those whose expertise in other fields is needed for its activities, to enlist all competent support required for the achievement of its projects, and to seek at all times to encourage close working relationships with populations in its care.
MdM – Italian mission has been active in Italy since 2015, at today is operating in Calabria, Sicily and Lazio.
The main objective of all interventions is to strengthen the existing health system in terms of managing the health of migrants (including mental health), paying particular attention to the health of minors and women.
Overall responsibility
Supporting the communication and interaction between beneficiaries and MdM health and psychosocial team, coping language barriers.
As a linguistic and cultural mediator, he/she is in charge of:
- contribute to the development of information materials on how to access health services;
- Contribute to creating link with the communities and to Provide MdM project with an understanding of the local, socio-cultural determinants through the knowledge of the beneficiaries’ cultures and a reading capability of the context in which he/she should operate
- linguistic and cultural mediation to all required activities within the project;
- cooperate with the staff in the organization of health education sessions and psychosocial group activities;
- support the relations with public and private social services (health registry, registry office, services dedicated to migrants);
- collect the datas of the project in a proper manner and present internal reports
- accompaniment of patients in referral public health facilities;
Profile
- Degree in linguistic and cultural mediation (desirable);
- 3 years of professional experience in social health or with organizations (public or private) that deal with migrants and refugees is an asset;
- Fluency in Italian;
- Good attitudes to work in multidisciplinary teams;
- Ability to work and solve problems in contexts with high levels of stress;
- Committed with MdM values and principles
Conditions
Successful applicants will enter in the “Intercultural Mediators Roster” of Rome project.
Selected people might be called for ad hoc/autonomous assignments according to the needs of the project.
