JOB DESCRIPTION
Context of the mission
Médecins du Monde is an international humanitarian organization whose mission is to provide medical care for the most vulnerable populations, the world over. It seeks to stimulate voluntary commitment from doctors, other health care providers, and from those whose expertise in other fields is needed for its activities, to enlist all competent support required for the achievement of its projects, and to seek at all times to encourage close working relationships with populations in its care.
MdM – Italian mission has been active in Italy since 2015, with a first intervention in Calabria aimed at improving the access to health of migrants and asylum seekers at the port during the landings and in the first and second reception centers. Along 2018 and 2019, the mission extended its interventions also in Sicily and in Lazio, in particular in Rome, with a program aimed also at reaching migrants outside the reception system. The main objective of all interventions is to strengthen the existing health system in terms of managing the health of migrants (including mental health), paying particular attention to the health of minors and women.
The Mission team is composed by:
- A general coordination team for Italy based in Italy
- A team to implement project’s activities related to access to health services for migrants in Roma and Lazio
- A team of consultants to implement project’s activities related to access to health services in Sicily and Calabria
- Volunteers
Overall responsibility
As a linguistic and cultural mediator, he/she is in charge of:
- contribute to the development of information materials on how to access health services;
- assist the social worker and the psychologist in providing information activities to migrants and refugees;
- contribute to identify migrants and refugees’ needs;
- cooperate with the medical and logistical staff in the organization of any health and hygiene education activities;
- if needed, facilitate the access to public local services for migrants and refugees (i.e. health registry, registry office, services dedicated to migrants, police stations, prefectures …);
- collect datas of the project in a proper manner and present internal reports;
- at the request of the General Coordinator, participate in site visits’ evaluation in other sites of possible intervention.
Profile
- Degreein linguistic and cultural mediation (desirable);
- 3 years of professional experience in social health or with organizations (public or private) that deal with migrants and refugees is an asset;
- Mother tongue in one of the language requested above;
- Fluency in Italian;
- Good attitudestoworkinmultidisciplinary teams;
- Habitto work andsolveproblemsincontextswith highlevelsof stress;
- Greatability to adaptto thecommunity lifeofthe team, even in situationsof comfortreduced.
