Founded in 1950, Doctors with Africa CUAMM was the first NGO focused on healthcare to be recognized by the Italian government. It is now one of the leading organization working to protect and improve the well-being and health of vulnerable communities in Sub-Saharan Africa. The NGO promotes long-term health cooperation projects, intervening also in emergencies to ensure that services are available to all.

Doctors with Africa CUAMM is currently active in 9 Sub-Saharan countries: Angola, Central African Republic, Ethiopia, Ivory Coast, Mozambique, Sierra Leone, South Sudan, Tanzania, Uganda. The NGO supports public and non-profit hospitals, local districts, schools of nursing and midwifery, and university faculties of medicine. 

CUAMM’s international and national staff work together on the front line to strengthen local health systems, in resource-limited contexts where the commitment and contribution of the individual can make a real difference. Job position: Pediatrician/Neonatologist

Location: Abidjan, Ivory Coast

Start date: March 2025

Duration: 12 months

Family duty station: YES

Purpose of the role

The neonatologist provides primary care for the newborn and collaborates in the start-up and smooth running of a NICU (Neonatal Intensive Care Unit) within the Abobo hospital

Key duties:

  • Attending complicated deliveries and giving basic care to newborns
  • Training staff on basic newborn care
  • Collaborating on awareness-raising activities on newborn care and kangaroo mother care
  • Collaborating with the construction expert in defining the organisation of the spaces and flows of the NICU and its set-up
  • Starting Neonatal Intensive Care Unit activities and collaborating with the clinical management of the hospital to ensure the quality of neonatal services
  • Providing specialized technical assistance, supervision and monitoring of care
  • Organising and implementing training activities for NICU staff
  • Contributing to the development and adaptation of clinical guidelines and protocols
  • Collaborating in data collection and analysis, monitoring progress and target achievement.
  • Taking part in technical meetings on neonatal health at provincial and national level

Requirements

  • University Degree in Medicine with Specialization in Pediatrics
  • Specific qualification or expertise in Neonatology will be an asset
  • Consolidated experience in Paediatrics and Neonatology
  • Previous experience of Pediatrics and Neonatology in low income countries
  • Good knowledge of French; good knowledge of Italian will be an asset

Terms of contract

Type of contract: collaboration contract

Salary: TBD according to NGO salary grids and compensation policy (basic salary for the job position, with possible increase based on professional experience)

Rest days: 2.5 days for each month of work

Flight ticket: one return flight at the beginning and end of the collaboration

Health issues: the NGO provides health insurance and covers vaccination costs

Visa and permits: the NGO bears the cost and paperwork for visa and work/residence permits

Accommodation: provided by the NGO, it is generally individual, depending on the logistical situation and the availability of accommodation in the workplace

Other costs: the NGO covers costs related to housing utilities and internet; food and personal expenses are covered by the worker

Family policy: where the socio-political context and logistics allow it, international staff may be accompanied by their partner or family. In this case, the NGO provides a salary supplement and guarantees flights, health insurance, visas and permits for dependents and accompanying family members.
